I am
Lukas Kuchernig

I am currently conducting my PhD research at the Medical University of Vienna, specializing in artificial intelligence–based OCT image analysis and the development of novel imaging biomarkers for retinal diseases.

About me

Physician and PhD student in ophthalmology, focusing on AI-based image analysis and digital health solutions.

Research and Digital Medicine

The ongoing digital transformation is opening new opportunities in medical research — particularly through the use of artificial intelligence in image analysis.
As part of my PhD project, I am investigating how reduced blood flow affects the onset and progression of various eye diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR), and retinal vein occlusion (RVO).

Using AI-assisted OCT and OCT-A analyses, my research aims to better understand the relationship between vascular alterations and structural retinal damage, with the goal of identifying new biomarkers and ultimately enabling more precise diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown how rapidly digital innovation can transform medicine. Now it is time to harness this momentum to advance research and patient care.

MD Thesis

In my doctoral research, I investigated the immunomodulatory properties of modified oncolytic measles viruses (OVs).

Progress
PhD Studies

Within my PhD project, I am developing AI-based methods for analyzing OCT and OCT-A data to understand the relationship between chorioretinal perfusion and retinal degeneration.
